The Georg Eckert Institute is devoted to research into school textbooks, with special emphasis on history and cultural studies. The disciplines represented at the institute include history, geography, social studies, education, ethnology, religious studies and Islamic studies. Our research is international and transdisciplinary, and involves close cooperation between the institute’s research, research infrastructure and knowledge transfer departments.

The focus of our research is defined by its common subject matter, that is, textbooks and other educational media as they function in social contexts. The principal objects of the research conducted at the GEI are structures of knowledge and models of identities conveyed via state education. Our current research projects focus on representations of Europe, textbooks and conflict, and the relationship of educational media to religion and globalisation. Constructions of the self and the other, processes of cultural translation, and practices of memory in the context of educational media represent overarching issues in the institute’s work.
