Barbara Christophe

PD Dr., History and Slavonic Studies in Kiel 1984-1990, received her PhD. from the University of Bremen in 1996 and her Habilitation in Political Sciences from the European University of Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder in 2004. In 1990, after her studies, she worked for one year at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt. She worked as a research fellow at the Department for Social Sciences of the University of Frankfurt/Main from 1991 to 2001, then as a lecturer and researcher at the Department for Cultural Sciences of the European University in Frankfurt/Oder from 2001 to 2006. She has worked as a research fellow at the Georg Eckert Institute since March 2007, since November 2009 Head of the research group "Education and Globalization".

Her regional research focus has been on the post-Soviet area, in particular on the Baltic States, the Caucasus and Central Asia. She has covered a wide scope of topics, from issues related to research on nationalism and transformation to questions linked with peace and conflict research.

Barbara Christophe has worked as a lecturer within the Robert Bosch Foundation's doctoral programmes, and as an expert at the German Academic Exchange Service and the Bertelsmann and Volkswagen Foundations. She is the editor-in-chief of the journal "Sociologus".

Projects
 
At the Georg Eckert Institute, Barbara Christophe is currently involved in two projects. Within a comparative study on Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Latvia, she has been analysing by using oral history research methods the personal memories history teachers have of the Breschnew era in former Soviet Union, with special focus on the theoretically meaningful intersection between individual and collective memory.
