Projects

At the Georg Eckert Institute Susanne Grindel leads the project “EurViews. Europe in Textbooks”, within the framework of which an internet edition is emerging. The edition will present conceptions of Europe and European-ness, as they are and have been conveyed in history and geography schoolbooks from the 20th and 21st centuries. Text, images and maps from European schoolbooks will be procured, commented on and translated. The project will, with its historical and systematic approach, bring to public awareness the plurality and variability of European conceptions as well as the variance and rivalry of remembrance cultures in the 20th century. A further concentration of her research lies in the depiction of economy and entrepreneurship in trans-national perspectives as well as in the area of economic education or entrepreneurial education. She led a workgroup on a comprehensive study on the theme of the representation of entrepreneurs and state in European textbooks.

Her research interests also home in on the processing of colonial background in European schoolbooks of the 20th century, which she intends to investigate in the compilation project “European Imagery and Their Translations. From the First World War to the Present.” This project will deal with Colonialism- a European Site of Memory.
