Simone Lässig

Prof. Dr., studied from 1982-1987 in Dresden, where she worked as a research fellow until 1999. From 1999 to 2001 she received a scholarship from the DFG. From 2002 through 2006 she was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C. She has been the director of the Georg Eckert Institute and professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Brunswick since October 2006.

She was a Stifterverband Visiting Fellow 2009/10 at the European Studies Centre of St Antony's College Oxford.

Simone Lässig is a member of several academic societies, academic advisory committees and editorial offices, such as the International Commission for the History of Representation and Parliamentary Institutions, the academic board of the Leo Baeck Institute and on the board of editors of the journal “Geschichte und Gesellschaft.”

She is the acting chairwoman of the First International Advisory Board of the Bundeskanzler-Willy-Brandt-Stiftung and a member of the academic advisory committee of the Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg, of the Foundation Reichspräsident-Friedrich-Ebert Gedenkstätte Heidelberg, of the Geschichtswettberwerbes des Bundespräsidenten (Körber-Stiftung Hamburg) and of the of the HATIKVA e.V. Dresden. Since October 2008 she has been a member of the managing board of the Verband der Historikerinnen und Historiker Deutschlands, and since 2010 a member of the managing board of the ForschungRegion Braunschweig.

Her main areas of research are aspects of  nineteenth- and twentieth-century social and cultural history, particularly Jewish history, religion and religiosity, philanthropy and patronage, entrepreneurial history and European history, as well as questions to do with teaching and learning from  history
