Call for Proposals Research Award 2020

The Research Award

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research. Member of the Leibniz Association makes a biennial research award, funded by the Braunschweig-based Westermann publishing group, to an outstanding piece of academic work on aspects of textbooks and educational media for schools which relate to cultural or political issues, educational practice or sociology of knowledge. The award will next be made in 2020.

The award carries prize money of 5,000 euro, of which 2,500 euro is intended to cover printing costs for the award-winning work’s publication in the Eckert. Die Schriftenreihe book series published by V&R unipress, Göttingen. Where an award-winning work has already been published, this portion of the award can be used for attendance at a conference or as a scholarship for research at the Georg Eckert Institute. The award may be shared among more than one recipient.

The award is given in recognition of outstanding monographs, doctoral theses or post-doctoral work such as Habilitation theses, and edited volumes; the editors are the recipients in the latter case. Candidates for the award may put themselves forward or be nominated by others. Works in German or English, which are as yet unpublished or whose publication took place no earlier than 1 January 2017, are eligible for the award.


Award for Young Academics

The Georg Eckert Institute funds a special award for young academics, worth 1.000 euro and aimed at dissertations for first degrees (MA, Staatsexamen, Diplom) gained not earlier than 1 January 2017. Bachelor’s dissertations are not eligible. Candidates or nominees for the award should submit their work together with two assessments from the candidate’s supervisors or other specialists in the field. The award winner will receive the opportunity to publish his or her work online on, the Institute’s specialist information portal for research into educational media.


The closing date for applications and nominations for both awards is 30 September 2019.


Candidates for the award, and those wishing to nominate a piece of work, should submit the following documentation:

Research Award

  • the work (book, monograph, thesis)
  • a short summary of the work (max. 3000 characters)
  • a letter of application or nomination which clearly describes how and why the work is deserving of the award
  • a short CV

Award for Young Academics

  • the work (dissertation)
