Information Management and Publications
The Information Management and Publications department ensures trouble-free internal and external communication, oversees information infrastructures, and supervises the management and editing of scholarly publications. It acts as a mediator, and provides services and guidance for the entire institute by working in close collaboration with the research department and the library. Its tasks cover three areas:
- Information Technology:
The IT infrastructure at the GEI ensures that up-to-date forms of communication are maintained by providing support for both internal and external users (IT/EDV-FAQ).
- Information Services:
The information and communication portal Edumeres.net has established itself as a virtual hub for specialists of educational media research working in an interdisciplinary and international context. A key element of this success has been the portal’s virtual research environment (VRE), which should be stabilised and streamlined given appropriate conditions following the continuing sponsorship from the German Research Foundation, for which an application is currently under consideration. In addition, the institute’s various internet platforms (such as EurViews, Europabilder, GEI-Digital and DeuFraMat) are being further developed conceptually and constantly updated. The library is also being provided with appropriate information systems. The department is striving in particular to develop digital humanities or eHumanities.
- Publications:
The publications of the Georg Eckert Institute appear as printed media. These include ‘Eckert. The Book Series’ published by V&Runipress in Göttingen, and The Journal of Educational Media, Memory, and Society (JEMMS), published by Berghahn Journals in Oxford and New York. Corresponding electronic editions are also made available, alongside otherwise unpublished electronic articles and studies, on the Edumeres.net portal.
The department also oversees the publication of the biannual ‘Eckert. Das Bulletin’. A further component of the department’s publishing activities is the editing and translation of scholarly works, which are an essential means to make the institute’s research findings known nationally and internationally. These works cover the entire range of print publications, including websites and the activities of specific projects.
The combination of different skills within the Information Management and Publications department guarantees a professional approach to work within and beyond the institute.
The development, and above all the adaptation, testing and use of new information and communication technologies, as well as the provision of research infrastructures, are among the central tasks of the Georg Eckert Institute. These tasks are the outcome of the GEI’s position within a network and are an essential means by which the institute’s research findings are made known in various societal arenas.
The Georg Eckert Institute is developing internet-based transfer services which will make it possible to adapt its output to the changing conditions of scholarly communication and publishing, and to the changing requirements of academic users. These projects, which are organised collaboratively by all departments within the institute, are coordinated by the Information Management and Publications department.
