The library at the Georg Eckert Institute is unique nationally and internationally as a research library serving the fields of comparative textbook and educational media research. The library allows researchers to access the world’s most comprehensive collection of international textbooks covering the subjects of history, geography, politics/social studies, ethics/religion as well as corresponding curricula and German-language primers.
The extensive inventory of scholarly literature and wide range of digital source material and specialist information make the library an ideal resource for academics from various disciplines conducting comparative research into the medium of textbooks. The research library is also open to the general public.
The library receives support from the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of its ‘Specialised Information Service (FID) on Educational Science and Education Research’. This enables the research library to continue in its long-standing role as a special collections library and effectively provide the specialist communities it serves with the academic literature and specialist information they require.
Since the mid-1960s the Georg Eckert Institute has served as the textbook centre for the Council of Europe.
