    As European elections open across Europe the GEI and the Historical Institute at the University of Mannheim are offering an insight into the work behind the transnational history book ‘Europe – Our History’.   • Awards for the Best Textbooks

    The winners of the ‘Textbook of the Year 2019’ were announced on 19 February at the didacta education trade fair in Cologne. First place in the languages category was awarded to ‘Camden Town’ by the Westermann Verlag. The society category was won by the history book ‘Zeit für Geschichte’, also published by the Westermann Verlag. Read more

  • Primers and Reading Books After the War

    The year’s first edition of the Institute's journal JEMMS examines European primers and reading books published around 1945. In addition to articles analysing Greek, Romanian and Polish books one paper examines differences and similarities between reading primers in East and West Germany. Read more

  • Project examining the digitisation of the school system

    The recently launched DATAFIED project examines the effects of digital technology in the classroom and the associated datafication of the education system. DATAFIED is a joint project with the Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg and the Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education. Read more

  • Vacancy for a System Administrator

    The GEI is looking to fill the position of IT system administrator in the Digital Information and Research Infrastructure department at the earliest opportunity. Among the successful applicant's responsibilities will be the administration of IT systems that make extensive use of open-source software. Read more

  • Call for Papers: Georg Arnhold Summer School 2019

    The sixth international Georg Arnhold Summer School will be held in Braunschweig from 25 to 29 June 2019. This year’s event is titled ‘Global Citizenship Education in a Changing World’. Applicants have until 17 March 2019 to submit papers. Read more

  • Archaeological excavations at the Georg Eckert Institute

    Last week archaeologists joined the mechanical diggers on the building site for the GEI’s new library building. While digging the foundations builders discovered human bones, most likely from the cemetery of the cloister that once occupied the site. Read more


    This year’s annual conference of the Kommission Schulforschung und Didaktik (Subdivision School and Curriculum) which will be held in Göttingen in September, will address research on education in schools and subject-specific didactics in the context of the digital shift. Proposals for conference papers may be submitted until 15 March. Read more

  • Thought-provoking textbooks

    The GEI, in partnership with the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Didacta Association, honours innovative textbooks each year in order to highlight their social significance. The prizes for ‘Textbook of the Year 2019’ will be awarded to the three best textbooks for upper secondary level in the language and society categories. The shortlist has been announced. Read more


    On Thursday 28 February the Deutsch-Polnischen KulturVerein Braunschweig e.V presented the book ‘Polnische Spuren in Deutschland’ (Polish Traces in Germany) in the GEI Research Library at 6 pm. This new publication comprises a comprehensive ‘encyclopaedia of reading books’ that illustrates the impact made by Poles in Germany in the past and the present. Read more
