Educational Media in Contexts of Globalisation
This research area aims to supplement and expand the Georg Eckert Institute’s traditional fields of work and research. It pays particular attention to the socio-cultural contexts in which educational media are produced and used.
In order to examine the relationship between globalisation and educational media, the research area focuses on three levels of analysis.
- It explores the role of educational media in the discursive constitution of globalisation.
- It investigates how the political arena surrounding the production of educational media is changing in the contexts of globalisation.
- It analyses how educational media are used in the school practices of teachers and students.

The projects in this research area develop their specific research questions on the basis of one or more of the following theoretical concepts. Each concept draws attention to a particular aspect of current global processes of transformation. Research projects understand globalisation as:
- A new cognitive schema which is leading to novel ways of seeing the world,
- The development of global relevancy spaces, and/or
- New forms of subjectivation.

Individual projects are aligned with one of two research areas exploring educational media developed for schools. The first examines the reconfiguration of memory cultures in contexts of globalisation. The second investigates the relationship between educational media and the increased awareness of social heterogeneity and diversity which globalisation entails.
