Textbook and Curriculum Development in South-East Europe

- Friedhof mit Bürgerkriegsopfern, Sarajewo 2010
The project continues the work of the GEI in former Yugoslavia and also includes Albania. It thus follows on from the project ‘Coordination of Textbook Research, Development and Comparison in South-East Europe’, and is divided into two project sections.
The first section investigates how the topic of the civil war is addressed and, if relevant, taught in schools in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Teaching materials on this subject have been developed in collaboration with the GEI.
The second section analyses how history is taught in Albanian-speaking areas, what is seen as one’s ‘own history’, and how it is defined in relation to the histories of neighbours. The analysis is primarily based on textbooks, teaching programmes and curricula, as well as additional learning and teaching materials for primary schools, vocational colleges and sixth-form. The project also investigates how teaching materials are developed in countries with an Albanian-speaking population as part of a democratic and European process of consolidation, particularly with regard to the changed intercultural, historical and social context.
