Learning in (Post-)Conflict Societies

The constraints of continual violent conflict pose a considerable challenge to pupils and teachers alike. Teaching materials which reflect the conflict or are designed specifically to deal with conflict situations represent only one aspect of the learning process, which is primarily influenced by other factors such as the home environment in which pupils grow up, or experiences of conflictual situations outside the school environment, as well as the role of teachers and the conditions in which teaching takes place. This research subtopic focuses on the empirical analysis of teaching materials in relation to these factors. The Georg Eckert Institute hosted a project to develop and test teaching materials in Israeli-Palestinian schools, which was run by the Peace Research Institute in the Middle East, PRIME. An additional emipirical research project has investigated Human Rights Education in Post-Conflict Societies in the case of Croatia. A current project deals with history education and dealing with apartheid in South Africa.
