Dr. Christoph Kohl

Dr Christoph Kohl has been working as a research fellow at the Georg Eckert Institute in the Textbooks as Media department since August 2017. He is associated with the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF). His current project, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, follows an interdisciplinary approach and researches the role played by authenticity in the populist discourses in Brazil, India and Ukraine, and the importance of mediality. His research also focusses on collective memory and nation-building processes, particularly in interethnic contexts, and on peace and conflict as well as on development cooperation (security sector reform and peacebuilding).

Christoph Kohl received a Magister Artium degree in the social sciences from the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz in 2004. From 2000 to 2001 he studied at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Marseille, France. He completed internships in educational projects for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (German Technical Cooperation, GTZ) in South Africa in 2002, at the National Research Institute / National Library in Guinea-Bissau in 2004 (part of the InWEnt - Capacity Building International’s ASA programme), and at the Pacific Information Center in Neuendettelsau, Germany in 2005. He has also worked as a consultant for GTZ education projects.

He was awarded his doctorate in 2010 by the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg after studying for his thesis, on nation-building and creolization processes in Guinea-Bissau, at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology between 2005 and 2010. From 2008 to 2009 he was the recipient of a scholarship from the Graduate School of Society and Culture in Motion in Halle (Saale). In 2011 and 2012 he worked on a project researching repatriated refugees in Angola at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. During this period he also conducted research as a co-applicant in a German-Portuguese project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on colonial crises and mimetic processes. From 2012 to 2016 he was a research fellow at the HSFK (Hessische Stiftung Friedens und Konfliktforschung) in a project studying the transfer of global and local norms in the context of the security sector reform in Guinea-Bissau. Since 2013 he has been involved in the Leibniz Research Alliance ‘Historical Authenticity’. From March to August 2016 he was guest lecturer at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, Brazil, at the invitation of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). In the course of research, working stays and internships he has travelled widely across lusophone countries (Angola, Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Mozambique) as well as southern and western Africa and Europe.
