Board of Trustees
The Institute’s Board of Trustees is made up of representatives of the federal states that funded the GEI up until the year 2010:

- Bremen (Dr. Wolff Fleischer-Bickmann)
- Hamburg (OSR Martin Speck)
- Hesse (MR Christoph Stillemunkes)
- Lower Saxony (Minister of Education Dr. Bernd Althusmann)
- North-Rhine Westphalia (RRin Dr. Sonja Wrobel)
- Rhineland-Palatinate (MR Herbert Tokarski)
- Saarland (MR Dr. Michael Ernst)
- Saxony (MinDirig Thomas Rechentin)
- Saxony-Anhalt (Torsten Klieme)
- Schleswig-Holstein (RegSchDir Michael Tholund)
- Thuringia (Dr. Klaus Paffrath)
The Institute’s home state is further represented on the Board of Trustees by Prof. Georg-Berndt Oschatz (former Director of the Federal Council), Prof. Rolf Wernstedt (former President of Lower Saxony State Parliament), Hans-Werner Schwarz (Member and Vice-President of Lower Saxony State Parliament), and Dr. Gabriele Heinen-Kljajic (Member of Lower Saxony State Parliament).
On the national level, the Foreign Office (Thomas Schmitt, VLR) and the Ministry of Education and Research (Antje Scharsich) are each assigned a place on the Board of Trustees.
Additionally, the German Commission for UNESCO is represented by its president and former minister Walter Hirche, and in turn the Technical University of Brunswick by its president, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Hesselbach, or by Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Harstick.
The Board of Trustees stipulates the essential structures of the Institute’s work, determines its annual budget and elects the Institute’s director, in each case for a minimum of 5 years. Georg-Berndt Oschatz currently chairs the Board, with Christoph Stillemunkes as Vice Chairman.
Budget Committee
The Board of Trustees has appointed a Budget Committee in order to prepare the budget for its annual approval. The Committee is currently chaired by Walter Hirche.
