Other Cultures in Geography Teaching
The ways in which "other cultures" are portrayed in geography teaching and concepts of "culture," "culture area" etc. were the subject of a project which started in 1995 and came to a close in 2001. The idea was to go beyond bilateral comparisons and to address views on "other cultures" in a more systematic way, dealing with more general questions. Since existing textbooks and other teaching materials left much to be desired, the project group decided to explore ways for improvement and to develop new exemplary materials. These materials were subsequently tested in schools. They are available on CD-ROM. In 1998, the results were presented during a conference in Braunschweig, where questions of method and approach, as well as classroom experiences were discussed.
