Staff Knowledge in Transition
Fellow of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK))

After several years as a teacher of literature, the educationalist researched at Boris Grinchenko University Kiev until 2022 for her PhD on 'Critical Thinking in Media Education'. In spring 2022, she came to the GEI for a short-term fellowship and stayed for research on the intermediality of German textbook representations of Ukraine. In her research, she inquires about which media texts and images are cited in relation to the contemporary history and present of Ukraine and what other references to media they make. The focus is on whether intermediality goes hand in hand with the didactic principles of multiperspectivity and controversiality, and to what extent they represent and convey social plurality through media references. Yulia Ostropalchenko is particularly interested in whether German textbooks encourage a critical approach to media with the help of tasks and methodological instructions and draws on theoretical approaches from sociology, gender studies and cultural studies.

She contributes her research based knowledge of media didactics to materials on the teaching and learning resources platform Zwischentöne.
