The Georg Eckert Institute has presented the ‘Textbook of the Year’ award annually since 2012. With its partners the bpd (Federal Agency for Civic Education) and the Didacta Association, the Institute is able, through this award, to recognise and honour publishers and authors who have developed and implemented innovative textbook concepts. The award should serve as a stimulus to wider debates on the subject of textbooks as well as raise awareness of the social significance of textbooks and advance the continuous development of educational materials. The award is under the patronage of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the German Länder.
The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Member of the Leibniz Association, has presented the biennial Georg Eckert research award since 2010. The award, which is sponsored by the Braunschweig-based educational publisher Westermann, honours excellence in academic work in the field of international research into educational media. It is presented for academic works which – topically or historically – relate to cultural, social, political or pedagogical aspects of textbooks and other educational media used in schools. In 2014 the Georg Eckert Institute also introduced an award for young academics, which aims to advance early-career scholars.
