Leibniz institutions work together in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams within Leibniz Research Alliances to investigate topical issues of great relevance to science and society.
Leibniz Research Alliances act as internal networking platforms with the aim of pooling complementary expertise from different institutes to pave the way for extra-successful research projects with wide appeal. They are central points of contact for policymakers, industry representatives, supporters, the media and the general public. Leibniz Research Alliances are open to collaboration with universities, non-university research and infrastructure facilities, international research groups and industry partners.
- Leibniz Research Alliance „Value of the Past“
Toppled monuments and shocking revelations, calls for historical revision and conflicts around restitution, debates about the epochal nature of the Anthropocene or the fundamentals of biodiversity research – all of these share one thing in common: the question of the "value of the past" is assuming an ever greater role in social self-understanding/when it comes to the way in which societies view themselves.
The Leibniz Research Alliance "Value of the Past", launched in September 2021, examines the importance of the past as compared with the present, it refers to the extent to which an era looks to the past for guidance as to its future course, and, as a value system it encompasses the historically rooted core beliefs of a society or of particular groups or milieus.
The new Leibniz Research Alliance ties in with the work of the Leibniz research group "Historical Authenticity". Its research questions and results are presented in the section "Archive - LFV Historical Authenticity".
Leibniz Research Networks focus on a particular key topic or technology. They form a communicative platform where the participating institutes can exchange subject-based, methodological and technical expertise and develop it further. Leibniz Research Networks are set up by the Executive Board of the Leibniz Association at the request of the Leibniz Institutes.
- Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN)
Experts from educational science, subject-matter education, linguistics, media and cultural studies, neurosciences, economics, political sciences, psychology, sociology as well as information science and computer science have formed a research alliance of 25 institutions, the Leibniz Education Research Network Alliance (LERN), to bring together their expertise and to strengthen visibility for political stakeholders, educational administrators and in view of the public at large.
- Leibniz Research Network „Central and Eastern Europe“
Political events of recent years have awakened greater public interest in Germany’s eastern neighbours and partners. The headlines have often been dominated by acute crises and conflicts. Yet in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of Central and Eastern Europe and sustainably shape these complex international relationships in the future, we require deeper insights into the region.
In our globalised society, issues of energy, environmental and security policy are just as important as concerns surrounding migration, identity and the handling of collective memory. In order to tackle these challenges, the Leibniz Association pools the greatest expertise on Eastern Europe-related studies available within Germany’s research organisations.
Since 2015, the Leibniz Institutes have been engaged in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Leibniz Central and Eastern Europe Network, in order to facilitate research on this region and foster dialogue between academia and society. This provides opportunities for collaborations within the fields of policy consulting, academic dialogue, research consortia, infrastructures and career development.
