The Otto-Bennemann-Grant

The Otto-Bennemann-Grant for methodologically innovative studies on international textbook research

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research awards once a year the Otto-Bennemann Grant for promoting methodologically innovative textbook research. Otto Bennemann (1903-2003), after whom the grant was named, supported the Institute's activities already when he held the office of Mayor of Braunschweig, as well as that of Minister of the Interior in the German Federal State of Lower Saxony. The grant's funds come from the foundation he established.

The monthly grant rate is € 2,000. The grant is limited to a two-month stay. It is meant for research work in Braunschweig; the grant holder is thus expected to spend the period covered by the grant at the Georg Eckert Institute. Applications shall be submitted to the Institute's director by September 15 of each year for the following year.

The applications are expected to meet high quality standards. The applicants shall point out their methodological approach and the innovative aspects of their work, which has to be set into the context of the discourse on textbook research. Furthermore, the application shall include:

  • detailed information on the subject of the study
  • information on the state of (preliminary) work and on the planned working schedule
  • information on the expected final result (monograph, post-doctoral thesis, etc.)
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a list of publications

The grant holder is requested to give a public lecture at the Georg Eckert Institute.

The Georg Eckert Institute will not automatically reimburse travel expenses. Nevertheless, a travel allowance may be applied for and provided to persons in need and according to the funds available. The allowance amounts to a maximum of 50 % of the travel expenses, but does not exceed $ 500.

The regulations attached to the standard scholarship program of the Georg Eckert Institute also apply to the Bennemann Grant.
