A new view of European history: A German-Polish textbook project

18.02.2016

Workshop for teachers and interested members of the public at didacta 2016 in Cologne.

Location: Congress C Centrum Nord, Conference room J
Date:
Thursday 18 February 2016
Time:
12 p.m. – 1.30 p.m.

Organiser: Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Eduversum GmbH

If you are familiar with the German-French history textbook for upper secondary schools or the European history book you will know that they have both broken new ground in an attempt to record European history through the eyes of neighbouring countries and to find new, trans-border narratives.

The German-Polish history book also intends to view European history from a different perspective. Traditional perceptions of Europe will be under scrutiny, as will didactic methodologies and diverse textbook traditions. Where does the history of our eastern neighbours appear? What might a joint narrative or even a European narrative look like in the neighbouring countries of Germany and Poland? And which didactic or methodological concepts could such textbooks be based upon?

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbooks (Braunschweig) and the Eduversum GmbH (Wiesbaden) are presenting extracts from their new textbook. This is currently being developed in cooperation with a Polish publishing house and is designed for history teaching in both countries at lower secondary level. Volume 1 of the history book series covering prehistory and early history, the ancient world and Middle Ages is scheduled to be published in spring 2016.

Participants at the workshop are invited to discuss the new textbook and share the benefits of their expertise.

This workshop is open to teachers and any other interested parties. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who register in advance.
