Conference on Religion and Education to be held by the Historic Education Research section of the DGfE

27.06.2017

In light of current controversies and debates surrounding the prospects and limitations of the coexistence of diverse religious communities within societies shaped by migration the question of the role played by ‘religion’ in education systems has become increasingly contentious. It has become clear that religion cannot be viewed as a fixed concept but rather as an amalgamation of meaning and practices, which each generation reinvents and which must be adapted to the prevailing social and political framework. Religion is therefore one of the central areas of investigation in the field of historical education research as both pre-modern and contemporary education history have been greatly influenced by ‘religion’.

The conference focusses on religion in the field of education from a historical perspective and examines more closely the religious symbols, rhetoric, rituals, practices and different representations of spirituality, as they have been developed within different religions and denominations. The speakers will question the role of religion in socialisation processes and the relationship between different religious and secular values systems as well as the role of religion in processes of identity construction and the reproduction of religious institutional frameworks within changing national and international contexts.

Registration deadline: 9 August 2017.

The conference programme and information regarding registration can be found here (in German).
