Imke Rath and Riem Spielhaus: Schulbücher und Antiziganismus: Zur Darstellung von Sinti und Roma in aktuellen deutschen Lehrplänen und Schulbüchern

Eckert. Dossiers 3 (2021). urn:nbn:de:0220-2021-0096.

This report, commissioned by the Unabhängige Kommission Antiziganismus and conducted by the Georg Eckert Institute, analyses the representation of Sinti and Roma in curricula and textbooks that were in use in 2019 in secondary schools in the 16 German federal states. The study covers the subjects of history, civic education and geography. It investigates topics of historical learning suggested by the curricula and the context in which Sinti*zze and Rom*nja are mentioned in the textbooks. But it also examines dominant patterns in their portrayal such as being depicted as a group of outsiders or as passive victims without the ability to act or resist persecution. The analysis also examines how textbooks deal with derogatory terms, including where pejorative designations are explicitly addressed and classified as an expression of practices of domination and exclusion.
