The Otto Bennemann Lecture
Jenseits von Schulbüchern: Perspektiven auf Staatsbürgerschaft und Konflikt in palästinensischen und israelischen Schulen. On Wednesday 29 April 2026 at 11:30 am, our current Otto Benneman Grant recipient, Dr Aline Muff, will give a lecture (in German) titled ‘Beyond textbooks: Perspectives of citizenship and conflict in Palestinian and Israeli schools’.
About the lecture:
A unified curriculum for citizenship education in the Hebrew and Arabic-speaking school systems has existed in Israel since 2001. In recent years it has become increasingly influenced by an ethno-national understanding of the state. This lecture uses qualitative data to bring to the fore the perspectives of students and teachers with regards to citizenship and conflict, and to explore the tensions between curricular discourse and political reality.
About the speaker:
Dr Aline Muff has more than ten years’ experience researching the role of political education and the construction of ideas of citizenship and belonging in societies affected by conflict. Most recently she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where she explored political education in schools and in everyday life with young people from marginalised backgrounds.
