Talk in the Foyer: The (Im)possible Power of Multilateralism?

The Contribution of Educational Media to a Peaceful World Order
18.06.2026
Villa von Bülow (GEI)
Celler Straße3

With an eventful history behind us and a changing world around of us, we are celebrating two milstones in international work on educational media this year: 75 years of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute and 80 years of UNESCO. While these anniversaries are a chance to look back over the many great things that UNESCO and the GEI have achieved over the years, they are also an opportunity to critically assess the best ways for international cooperation to prosper in times of global crises and digital transformation.

3:30 p.m.: doors open and short guided tours in English and German through the foyer exhibition

4 p.m.: Talk in the Foyer: “The (Im)possible Power of Multilateralism? The Contribution of Educational Media to a Peaceful World Order.”

We will be joined by prestigious guests with whom we will discuss the future of international work on educational media: What role should international organisations and multilateral civic networks play in political and historical education in an increasingly polarised world? How can educational media best encourage critical reflection of growing nationalism and imperialism? How can multilateral understandings and partnerships contribute to the creation of a more peaceful world?

We look forward to receiving as our guests:

  • Dr Thorsten Kornblum, mayor of the City of Braunschweig (welcome address)
  • Anke Reiffenstuel, commissioner for Education and Science Diplomacy, Federal Foreign Office, Berlin (welcome address and podium
  • Dr  Roman Luckscheiter, Secretary-General German Commisson for UNESCO
  • Alain Lamassoure, founding president of the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe, OHTE (podium)
  • Steven Stegers, executive director, EuroClio (podium)

The panel discussion will be held in English. It will be followed by a reception in the institute’s garden.
