“Pruzzenland” is a region in the north-east of Europe which has been influenced over the course of history by a diverse range of cultural and multi-ethnic traditions and has found itself the subject of competing national claims made by Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Russia. Probably the most significant rupture faced by the region came in the aftermath of the Second World War, in the shape of the shift in national borders affecting the region and the almost complete change in its population. In recent times, the way in which the past is dealt with has become a key resource in the search for regional identity in Poland, Russia and Lithuania.
This volume is the first to undertake an international comparison, spanning the twentieth century up to the present day, of narratives around and representations of the region in textbooks and to draw them together systematically.
