Applications invited for the ‘Textbook of the Year Award 2016’

Press release 8 July 2015

On March 18 2016 The Georg Eckert Institute will present the fifth annual ‘Textbook of the Year’ prize at the Leipzig book fair. This year’s award will focus on outstanding textbooks for upper secondary school level. The prize honours editors and authors for the development and realisation of innovative textbook concepts. The prize is run under the auspices of the Standing Conference of Education and Culture Ministers.

Textbooks from three categories: languages, history/ society and STEM can be entered for the award. They should be exceptional examples of contemporary textbooks that demonstrate bold and innovative content choice, didactic methodologies and design as well as being able to satisfactorily meet demanding educational standards and offer a skill-centred approach to learning.

Publishing houses have until the 15 September to enter current textbooks.  Pupils, teachers, parents, education experts and other academics are also invited to recommend outstanding textbooks for the award. All titles will then be assessed by panels of experts in a two-step process. The entire jury will assemble in mid-January, under the chairmanship of Prof. Eckhardt Fuchs, director of the Georg Eckert Institute, when it will draw up a shortlist of the best three textbooks in each category. Almost two months later, on 18 March, the winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Leipzig book fair.
