Call for Applications:
Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship 2028

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the 2028 Georg Arnhold Senior Fellow for Education for Sustainable Peace.

The principal objectives of the Georg Arnhold Program are (i) to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of peace education by bringing together scholars and practitioners, (ii) to respond to the need for decolonial approaches to peace education research and practice, (iii) and with its publications, to render findings and experiences freely available via open access publishing. 

The Georg Arnhold Program is run by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) in Brunswick, Germany. The GEI conducts research into the production, content and appropriation of educational media for schools in their socio-cultural, political, economic and historical contexts.

The fellowship aims to promote education for sustainable peace with a particular focus on educational media and curricula at secondary-school level in all regions of the world. Candidates should make clear in their application how their project responds to the objectives listed above. 

The fellowship, which includes a research stay of six months at the GEI in Germany, offers outstanding and experienced individuals in the field of peace education the opportunity to focus on a research – or practice – related project. The project should focus on educational media of all kinds. 

The Fellowship is endowed with

• a monthly stipend of 3,300 EUR for a fellowship period of six months (in exceptional cases a shorter time frame can also be arranged, the minimum period being three months) at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media ǀ GEI in Brunswick, Germany
• return economy airfare to Germany
• and support with administrative matters and publication work provided by the program coordinators

Eligibility

Applications are welcomed from outstanding scholars in the humanities, political and social sciences or education, with a project firmly located in the field of peace education. We also welcome applications from distinguished practitioners in the field of peace education with high-level international experience, for example in NGO management.

Scholarly applicants are required to hold a PhD and practitioner applicants are required to demonstrate at least five years of advanced professional achievement in their field. Pracademics should combine scholarly excellence with hands-on practice and grassroots work. 

Obligations of the Fellowship Holder

• The Georg Arnhold Senior Fellow shall complete a project in the area of education for sustainable peace, preferably with a focus on educational media or curriculum development.
• The Fellowship holder is expected to take responsibility for the intellectual and conceptual design of the annual conference of the Georg Arnhold Program in collaboration with the coordinator of the Georg Arnhold Program.
• They shall also present their project at the GEI’s research colloquium.
• The Senior Fellow is expected to spend their fellowship period at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media ǀ GEI in Brunswick, Germany, and to participate in the daily working life of the institute. The working language will be English.
• The outcomes of the fellow’s project should be published no later than one year after the termination of the Fellowship. The output from the fellowship holder’s work should preferably be policy papers, educational materials, research papers, or a larger publication.
• Candidates are responsible for obtaining a passport and visa, should the latter be required, as well as for arranging their own health and liability insurance for the duration of their stay in Germany.

The Fellowship offers

• Use of the GEI’s international library of educational media (such as school textbooks, curricula and digital educational resources for schools) as a resource center, and the opportunity to explore the role textbooks and other educational media play in processes of peace and reconciliation but also in exacerbating inequities and conflict.
• Mentoring by/discussions with GEI experts and the opportunity to present at GEI research colloquia.
• Use of “The Basement” (experimental digital media lab at GEI with focus on games learning, VR, robotics, creative pedagogies, etc.) for own research. 
• Access to a broad network of scholars and practitioners working at the cross-section of peace education and educational media research.
• Open Access fees for direct project outputs will be covered where possible.

Application and Selection Procedure

The application and selection process consist of five steps:

Online Application: Please complete the online application form. You will be asked to describe your project by answering some guiding questions about its objectives, the research gap you intend to address, your project's methodological and theoretical framework, and the expected outcomes. Before you start, it is therefore recommended to have short and longer written descriptions ready. Please also consult our AI-use policy before beginning. 

Pre-selection by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI): The initial pre-selection of eligible candidates and suitable projects involves a multi-stage selection process at the GEI by academic experts of the institute. Up to 10 applications will be then forwarded to the Academic Advisory Board of the Georg Arnhold Program.

Shortlisting by the Academic Advisory Board of the Georg Arnhold Program: The Advisory Board will select the top three candidates for the final selection step.

Submission of full proposals by the shortlisted candidates: The three shortlisted top candidates will be invited to submit a full application (including a short CV and a list of publications) and a detailed project proposal via email. The full proposal should be no longer than 25 pages, including references and evidence of the impact they have made in the area of peace education (e. g. oft-cited publications, project websites, success stories, etc.). Each of the three shortlisted candidates, of which one will be selected, will be invited to an online interview with the Academic Advisory Board of the Georg Arnhold Program.

Selection Criteria: The principal criteria for the Board’s decision will be (i) the candidate’s expertise, experience and innovation as a practitioner or researcher, (ii) the overall quality of the project and the proposed output, (iii) the alignment of the project with the objectives of the Georg Arnhold Program (see above), (iv) and the candidate’s motivation to benefit from the stay at the Institute specifically.

Start of the Fellowship

The successful candidate can begin their fellowship in January 2028 at the earliest.
