Otto-Bennemann-Fellowship 2023

Dr. Yasamin Alkhansa

Yasamin Alkhansa is a Research Associate at the University of Sussex, School of Education and Social Work where she completed her PhD in 2019. She won British Educational Research Association’s (BERA) Doctoral Thesis Award in the same year for her ethnography of official history as resisted and accommodated in schools in Iran. She has completed a post-doctoral fellowship on memory-narrative politics and schooling in authoritarian contexts funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and is now writing a monograph to be published by Palgrave Macmillan on official history and narrative change as constructed in school textbooks in Iran since 1979. She is interested in education as implicated in contested narratives of the past. She has worked with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and has researched different aspects of education in Iran in Farsi and English. She received the Otto Benemann Fellowship and research grant in 2023 from the GEI in recognition of her innovative research methodology and her forthcoming monograph.

Otto-Bennemann-Lecture

Official History and Narrative Change in Authoritarian Contexts

Building on the findings from her doctoral thesis, "Selective Histories: Living and Teaching in Iran under the Islamic Republic" (2019), the lecture investigates official narrative change since 1979 in Iran. Understood as the 'autobiography' of the State, the research provides a longitudinal analysis of school history textbooks. The lecture maps the changing representations of specific historical events which are pivotal yet contentious in Iran’s contemporary history. It focuses on the strategies that the State has employed to transform its official account of the past, particularly focusing on the way omission mediates the narrative. Understanding textbooks as the "archive of the state", the lecture conceptualizes omission as a mechanism shaped by struggles over hegemonic historical narrative, material limitations and arising sensitivities in society.
