Dr Lukas Dehmel joined the GEI in August 2025, where he works on the Emerging Tech Lab project, which is a sub-project of the Lower Saxony Digital Teaching Hub and is based in the GEI’s digital lab ‘The Basement’. He tests and researches emerging technologies in (higher) education from an educational media science perspective. The project also focuses on creating formats that enable students to experience emerging technologies in courses at universities in Lower Saxony (especially in teacher training programmes).
Dr Lukas Dehmel completed a bachelor’s degree in teaching economics and politics, and special needs education, at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, where he also completed a Master’s degree in educational science focussing on ‘Education in Europe’. From 2018 to 2025 he worked in the field of media education and empirical media research at Paderborn University where he completed his PhD with a thesis on the professionalisation of media pedagogy in professional development training. From August 2023 to July 2025 he worked on the joint research project LeadCom (sub-project at Paderborn University), which was funded by BMFTR/NextGenerationEU. In this project he worked on the removal of barriers in school communication cultures and the emergence of digital accessibility. Dr Lukas Dehmel also researches educational theory perspectives of life-logging and self-tracking practices. Whilst at Paderborn University he also worked as a lecturer and was awarded the Young Teacher Award. He has been the speaker for the working group on adult and further education within the Association for Media Education and Communication Culture (GMK) since November 2020.
