Palgrave Handbook of Textbook Studies

The Palgrave Handbook of Textbook Studies is a definitive work; one that systemises, reflects and consolidates the theoretical and methodological principles of textbook research and of research into educational media related to schools. The Handbook has a dual objective: the first aspect of which was to produce a comprehensive and professionally substantiated assessment and mapping of the disparate theoretical and methodological approaches existing in this field. The second aim built upon and developed the first: taking societal change into consideration as well as the associated changes to educational media formats and their use, the goal was to formulate thematic recommendations for possible combinations of methods and to conceive innovative approaches to future textbook research.

The handbook demonstrates the hermeneutic tradition prevalent in textbook research but also identifies new trends, theories and methodological orientations in this research field; advancing the remit of the work beyond an assessment of the field and establishing new perspectives. An exhaustive bibliography and an annotated summary of relevant research institutions and journals complete the handbook.

As a definitive text, the handbook will enable researchers to locate and compare information beyond disciplinary boundaries that is relevant to textbook-related media. In doing so it also contributes to the hitherto only loosely institutionalised field of textbook research becoming a more firmly established discipline.
