Special issue: “Conflicts and Textbooks in South Asia

(Guest editors: Muhammad Ayaz Naseem and Georg Stöber)

the peer-reviewed Journal of Educational Media, Memory, and Society (JEMMS) invites contributors to participate with papers covering Nepal and Sri Lanka.

This special issue focuses on different aspects of the relationship between textbooks and conflicts in the regional context of South Asia. School textbooks reflect and contribute to this conflictual background. In addition to other societal and political dynamics such as demonstration of territorial claims, the (biased) treatment of societal issues, etc. textbooks play a significant role in the construction of identities in South Asia. Some of the questions that form the basis of contributions in this volume include but are not limited to questions as:

Do schools in South Asia – and textbooks as authorized learning media – educate towards a specific national self-image and patterns of behaviour – peaceful or conflictual? Is the attempt to form “national identity” associated with a strong delimitation of the neighbours and with the exclusion of minorities from the national “we” inside the country? How do the books handle internal conflicts inside the society and those between the countries? How are these conflicts categorized? Can conflict-related patterns be detected? Do the books fuel conflicts or do they try to educate towards non-violent conflict resolution and “peace”?

The aim of the contributors is not to specifically look into a certain class of conflicts, for example between neighbours, but into a broad spectrum, taking internal and external ones into consideration and look into their relationship.

Papers in English of approximately 6000 words will be welcomed. Authors interested should send the title and a short abstract of their proposal until Jan. 31st, 2011 to MANASEEM(at)education.concordia.ca and stoeber(at)gei.de.
